The formation of Siberian School of phthisiologists coincided with the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, when in December of 1941 the Central Tuberculosis Research Institute was evacuated from Moscow to Novosibirsk. According to the USSR People's Commissars' Order №19533, issued on December 1, 1943, the  Novosibirsk Tuberculosis Research Institute was established

Dr Alexandra Apollonovna Letunova was the first director. Subsequently the NTRI leaders were: Anna Georgievna Aminina, Richard Karlovich Lozinger, Mikhail Vasilevich Svirezhev, Boris Nikolaevich Priss, Igor Grigorevich Ursov, Alexey Sevastyanovich Tarasov. Since 1989 to the present time the institute is headed by the Honored Pysician of Russia, Ph.D., Professor Vladimir Alexandrovich Krasnov.

Previously scientific work was conducted in the following areas: the organization of prevention and paediatric TB treatment; sulfanilamides for anti-TB therapy; diagnostic criteria of an active TB process; differential diagnostics by using subcutaneous tuberculin injection. The NTRI indebted to Professor N.G. Stojko for introduction of surgery in the complex of treatment for pulmonary TB, he has organized the surgical department (with 30 beds) on premises of the Central Tuberculosis Reserach Institute Branch in 1942. Since then the NTRI' surgical services established a school of phthisiosurgery in Western Siberia.

In different years the surgeons yave invented:

  • An original method of pleural adhesions destruction for cases with ineffective medical pneumothorax
  • Improvement of pneumothorax procedure as a highly effective method of collapsotherapy combined with specific chemotherapy
  • Fundamentally new surgical approaches, which fwere applied for extrapleural pneumolysis, lung decortication and pleura ectomy
  • A method of extrapleural atypical lung resection with limited thoracoplasty, combined with collapse surgery treatment of cavities - extra pleural pneumolysis with open tamponade and selective thoracoplasty.
  •  New method of open cavities treatment
  • Harmonious system of combined and staged surgical treatment of patients with the most severe chronic cavernous pulmonary tuberculosis, which were previously considered as inoperable cases.
  • Traditionally, NTRI special attention was paid to the problems of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. Reconstructive methods of surgical treatment of osteo-articular TB, roentgen lymphography opportunities in some forms of abdominal TB. Renal biopsy diagnostic significance in tuberculosis was developed, studied and proposed in clinical practice in NTRI.

Since 1970 under Professor Igor G. Ursov leadership the specialists of the Novosibirsk Tuberculosis Research Institute and the Novosibirsk State Medical Institute have successfully developed a fundamentally new direction in anti-TB therapy - intermittent intravenous bactericidal chemotherapy. In-depth studies in this area have led to the development of the most clinical effective (cavities closure up to 86%) and cost-effective chemotherapy method.

The Laboratory and experimental department of the NTRI have made great contribution to phthisiology development in Russia

    Here for the first time:

  • Morphology and histochemistry of chronic primary tuberculosis have been studied
  • Biochemical characteristics of protein metabolism, oxidation and acid-base balance in patients with chronic cavernous pulmonary tuberculosis, while undergoing open cavities treatment, have been analysed
  • The possibilities of thermography in tuberculosis diagnostics have been investigated
  • Quantitative criteria for assessing the physical capacity of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis were obtained
  • The possibility of experimental  immunotherapy of tumors by using BCG vaccination was justified.

In the Novosibirsk Tuberculosis Research Institute science-based program of stationary and ambulatory treatment of TB patients has been developed. Its implementation in practical phthisiology allowed to reduce time for inpatient treatment stage, while maintaining therapy efficacy - it made possible to treat twice as more patients by using the same funds.
  • In recent decades NTRI scientists conduct fundamental researches in the direction of tuberculosis epidemiology, diagnosis and differential diagnosis. They also have established highly effective etiopathogenetical approaches and treatment methods by using lysosomotropic forms.

    NTRI scientists:

  • Proposed effective solutions for targeted TB therapy problems.
  • Developed several methods, which were enable to increase the efficacy of urogenital TB treatment.
  • Approved a treatment strategy in patients with destructive pulmonary TB and nonspecific purulent endobronchitis.
  • Led in development of a highly sensitive method for diagnosis of tuberculosis using the phagocytes migration in area of "skin window" under tuberculin provocation.
  • A molecular epidemiological analysis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains circulating in the West Siberian region was conducted.
  • Currently Novosibirsk Tuberculosis Research Institute is a scientific, organizational, methodical and medical advisory centre. Since 2002 the Siberian Federal Okrug (SFO) launched the anti-TB strategy which was developed in the NTRI. By the NTRI'  initiative  in the SFO was created a specialized TB medical council in whole Siberian Federal Okrug, the main tasks of it were the TB activities coordination in its territories.

In 2003 Novosibirsk Tuberculosis Research Institute presented the evidence-based model of the Federal Tuberculosis Control Center in SFO. Its tasks were the rational and competent application of the control and supervision management for the effective functioning of TB service, thus -  reducing TB incidence.

NTRI partners are the academic institutions of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, NGO "Vector", Novosibirsk State Medical University.

The Institute' history  is closely connected with great names of scientists and physicians who have made significant contributions to the development of not only the Novosibirsk Tuberculosis Research Institute, but for benefits of the whole Siberian phthisiology and phthisiosurgery: A.I. Borovinskiy, V.E. Beliavskiy, I.G. Ursov, G.M. Gorbunov, A.A. Andrienko, Y.N. Kurunov, V.G. Kononenko, V.A. Potasheva, G.S. Murashkina, L.M. Pogozheva and many others.
