Center of Excellence of the WHO Supranational Reference TB Laboratories Network (NCE-CRL)

11 December 2014 года: during the 25th session of the WHO Working Group on TB in the Russian Federation the draft concept of the formation of the Russian Federation of a network of national reference laboratories for the diagnosis of tuberculosis was projected. The project was approved and supported by WG meeting, as well as by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.

Official status assignment of the WHO Centers of Excellence of Supranational Reference TB laboratories Network , for three federal TB bacteriological laboratories (FGBU Novosibirsk TB Research Institute, FGBU Ural TB Research Institute and FGBU Central Tuberculosis Research Institute) took place during the Partnership Forum of the Global Laboratory Initiative at WHO headquarters on 27 April - 1 May 2015.

The main objective of the Centre of Excellence will be to support TB laboratory services, TB facilities withnin supervized by the Institute territories in matters of organizational, methodological and practical assistance for laboratory diagnostic methods of tuberculosis and mycobacteriosis, as well as organization and participation in epidemiological surveillance of tuberculosis, monitoring of the prevalence of drug resistance and implementation of external quality control of laboratory tests.

Creating such a Center of Excellence on the premises of the bacteriological laboratory will allow to carry out training seminars for employees of laboratory services in Siberia and the Far East, including the issues of infection control in laboratories involved in TB diagnostics. Putting into operation in April last year, this new laboratory building has allowed to significantly expand the size and capacity of the laboratory, to accomodate modern high-tech methods of diagnostics, to solve properly problems with biological safety. The laboratory dimension is over 500 sq.m and the premises are equipped with an autonomous ventilation system with air-filtration system, in accordance with international safety standards of handling the causative agent. Up to date, the similar laboratories in TB services do not exist nearby

The modern laboratory equipment allows training for practicing bacteriologists from Siberian and Far Eastern Federal Okrugs for all known methods of laboratory diagnosis of tuberculosis.

Consolidation of new molecular biological and bacteriological methods will make it possible to monitor the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis to a new level and will allow to study the genetic diversity of Mycobacterium strains circulating on the territory of Siberia and the Far East.
